Science/Math (Day 4)
Objectives—see Project Objectives

Introduction:

Students will volunteer to review Day 2’s class and the work they did in the class.  The teacher will allow time for all students to respond if they so desire.  Also, time will be given to answer any questions or to allow students to finish their Day 2 work.

Before students finish Day 2 work, however, the teacher will allow the students to access the websites offered in the previous class.  Students will research the Sun and other stars using the following guidelines:

Diameter of the Sun
Distance from Earth to the North Star
Distance from one side to the other of the Milky Way

The teacher will introduce the concept of Scientific Notation with many examples and discussion (students have had topics relating to multiplying and dividing by tens and with exponents in previous lessons).  The teacher will remind students that scientists across the world use this method of writing both very large numbers and very small numbers.  Students will use their information of distances of the planets from the Sun, of the North Star from Earth, and the diameter of the Milky Way and rewrite these large numbers using Scientific Notation.  The teacher will also introduce very small numbers and have students rewrite these in Scientific Notation.  Students may work with a partner or two.  Answers should be available for students to check their work.
