Lesson Plan #5
Day 8 – Bible
“Astrology”Purpose: Students will study the concept of astrology, and the purpose of it in today’s world. Students will also decide whether it is even scientifically accurate, and reflects a life of faith.
Introduction: Begin the class by asking students to clip out the horoscopes out of various magazines and newspapers. Make sure there are enough sources so all students can participate.
Lesson:
1) Bring the students into large groups. Ask them to read their horoscope for that day. Does it fit their life? More than likely, because they are made to be really general! Pose the question, “Is it proper to use horoscopes to guide us in our life, and to help us make decisions? Why or why not?” As an answer, have the students turn to Proverbs 3:5,6. For further study and discussion, the teacher could handout the paper available at www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/astrology.html.
2) Give the students the following verse references. Remind them to look at the context that the text is in.
Amos 5:8 Job 9:9-10
Job 38:31-33 Dueteronomy 4:19
They are to look them up, note what each verse says about the stars, the solar system, and the planets. Have them answer the question of why God created the stars and the solar system.Assignments:
1) Students should complete a paragraph based on the following starter. “I think astrology is _____________________ because…”
Resources:
A large selection of daily newspapers and magazines.
