The Gift Of Life

 Day 10:

Science- “Your Eyes Saw my Unformed Body”

Closing Lesson

Your Eyes Saw My Unformed Body…

Goals/Objectives

  1. Students will be able to see how intricately God has created them and develop an appreciation for their bodies and individuality.

  2. Students will be able to understand and apply knowledge of the basic components and functions of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. (Iowa Core Curriculum)

  3. Students will be able to understand and apply knowledge of how different organisms pass on traits (heredity). (Iowa Core Curriculum)

Materials

  1. Students will bring their individual cell representations

  2. Digital Camera (Pictures of each student’s work for future students, parents and/or school website)

Procedure

  • Introduction

  1. Begin by reading Psalm 139:1-18

  • Small Discussion/Reflection statements about the verses and their relation to science

    • Read Verse 16 again, How amazing is it that God created you with probabilities from punnet squares before you were even made?

    • Think about all the people in the world—did you realize that every single person now, in the past, and in the future has had their own individualized hereditary, God has come up with over billions of different combinations.

    • Did you know that when God first created you as one cell he still had to create all the organelles we will talk about today?

    • And when he made  as one cell he could already see your entire life at the same time? How great is our God?

    • Do scientists have everything discovered about the human body? No According to verse six, will we ever be able to comprehend God’s intricate works? We will never be able to fully understand God’s majesty and power.

  • Today we are going to present our cell representations and punnet squares to our classmates. Even though we will never fully be able to comprehend the complete majesty of God, it is important we study his works so that we can discover more about his awesome power.

  • Lesson Steps

  1. Students will take turns presenting their cell representations to their classmates.

(The assignment and presentation instructions were given in Lesson Three)

  • Closure

  1. Class will watch speech by Louie Giglio about the protein laminin which holds all cells together. Students will be able to see how Christ is in absolutely every part of our being. This closure could also work as a transition into a unit on different systems of the human body. Cells is just the beginning of the middle school study on science, future units will expand on how cells are the building blocks of life.

Evaluation

  • Note: Definition of Organelles will be worth three times the amount of points. So know your organelles!

  • (Example: 3 out of 5 is actually 9 out of 15)

  • Cell Creativity: 5 Pts Labeling: 5 pts Definitions Of Organelles: 15 pts Presentation: 5 pts = 30 Points total

Scoring Rubric

  5 4 3 2 1
Cell Creativity Objects resemble all the organelles’ sizes and shapes accurately and are very original. Objects for cell do a good job of resembling cell organelles appearance. Some of the objects resemble the cell organelles. Objects represent cell organelles, but some organelles are missing.

Most organelles are missing and objects do not resemble cell organelles.

Labeling All objects are clearly labeled as corresponding organelle. Most objects are labeled as corresponding organelle. Most objects are labeled; labels may be hard to read. Some organelle labels are missing and some are incorrectly labeled. None of the objects are labeled properly.
Definitions of Organelles Student has clear understanding of each organelle’s function and location in cell. Students are able to recite the textbook definitions of each organelle. Students have brief descriptions of most of the organelle’s functions.

Students struggle to define certain organelles.

Students need more practice on cell organelle functions and properties.
Class Presentation

Student speaks clearly to the class and points out each object’s relation to the organelle.

Student points out each organelle and describes reasoning for choosing a few objects.

Student points out each organelle with little reasoning for choices. Student points out each organelle with no explanation of reasoning. Student does not present cell model to class.

Closing Lesson

Team Members: Kiley Schouten, Erin Cordell, Nicole Scholten, Jake Van Otterloo, and Emily Groen

Topic: Closing to Integrated Unit on Identity and Human Value

Objectives

  1. Students will be able to describe what they have learned during this unit.

  2. Students will be able to reflect on what they have learned during this unit.

Materials Needed

  1. Completed project from English Lessons

  1. Completed project from a Science Lesson

  1. Completed project from a Social Studies Lesson

  1. Completed project from an Art Lesson

  1. Completed project from a Math Lesson

  1. Learning Activity Center

  2. Tables to display the projects and the class Learning Activity Center on.

Procedur

  • Introduction

  1. This lesson will be in the evening in the gym of the school. The night will begin with all the students and parents together in the gym. The teachers will briefly describe each unit that they taught in this shared thematic unit. After this the students will be divided into 5 groups, which were previously assigned earlier in the day with one teacher as the leader of each group.

  • Lesson Steps

  1. The projects will be divided by the class subject throughout the gym. For example, all of the Social Studies projects will be in one corner of the gym and all the Science projects will be in another corner. The groups will then be sent to one of the class projects. Each student will have an opportunity to describe their own project from that subject and also explain what they learned in that class. After every student has had a chance to present their project the groups will move to the next class subject with its completed projects and do the same thing at this station. Students and parents will go around to every station of classes with the projects until it is completed.

The parents and students will then go to a classroom and watch the video called The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss. This is a short story that is about the individuality of each person and what makes each person unique. This video is about 25 minutes long.

After the completion of this video the parents and students will meet in the school cafeteria and have a time of fellowship with snacks and drinks will be the closure to the night as well.

Assignment: There will not be an assignment for this lesson.

Evaluation:

  1. Students will be evaluated by each teacher upon the completion of their project. This will be done separately by each teacher in accordance to their forms of assessment for each individual project.
