Gems in the Market Today
Objectives:
Students will be able to  distinguish what qualities make a precious stone valuable. Students will be able to identify a few stones that have value.
Students will be able to understand and appreciate the aesthetic value for precious stones.
Students will be able to praise God for a beautiful creation that involves raw beautiful.
Materials:
1.  Pictures of different gems and precious stones from magazines that the teacher should supply. (Gold, Diamonds, Agates, etc.)
2.  KWL Chart

Strategies:
Introduction-
     We will first do a KWL Chart with precious stones.  We will list the stones that we know that are valuable.  The most common stones that students will list will be diamonds and gold nuggets probably.  Then the students will then write down what they want to know about gems, and other precious stones.  The students will more than likely want to know other stones that are valuable, location of valuable stone in the area they are in. 

Lesson Steps-

1.  The students will then go into the computer lab and will be lead on the Internet to a website that will help them answer their questions.  First type in http://www.jewelrysupplier.com/, then the students can pick the precious stone or metal they are interested in. 

2.  Students will be expected to form cooperative groups and decide on a precious stone/metal.  They will then write an advertisement to perspective miners telling them the advantages about their precious metal/stone.  The advertisement can either be a “TV.” commercial or radio commercial.  The student’s commercial must contain the qualities of the stone/metal that are appealing to consumers and collectors.  They must also include where this metal/stone can be found.  The students must also make sure their commercial identifies the values and uses the stone/metal has.  Example

Closure-
    
 We will then discuss in class, outside of groups, why we think God gave us beautiful rocks, stones, and metals.  We will discuss what are the pros and cons to being a miner.  If the students don’t bring up the point of greed, make sure the teacher plays devil’s advocate and argue for gather lots of stones and obtaining great amounts of wealth.
 

Assignment:
Make an advertisement for your group’s precious metal/stone.  The advertisement should be witty, and informative.
 
Evaluation:  
 

Student’s advertisement must include
     1.  Name of precious metal/stone
     2.  Where it can be found
     3.  Uses for the material
     4.  Why the miner should pick their stone/metal over others
