 1992 Olympics in Barcelona

Physical Education

Objectives:

Upon completion of this lesson students will be able to:

  1. Learn about the concepts of some of the sports participating in the summer Olympics.
  2. Appreciate that different students have different talents pertaining to sports and physical abilities.
  3. Learn to work as a team to accomplish a goal.

Content Concept:

The concept to be taught is to allow the students to have physical activity.  They will gain physical fitness skill and at the same time learn about a world wide competition between countries.

Materials:

  • Outside playground area with space for games
  • Assortment of prizes for different areas of sports
  • Discus
  • Shot put
  • Measuring Tape
  • Score Cards

Lesson Steps:

Activity 1:

Ask the students if they remember anything about the 1992 Olympic games.  Tell them that the summer games were celebrated in Barcelona, Spain.  Point out to the students where this is located on the map.  Talk about some of the different sports and the winners of these competitions.  Also talk about some of the countries that partook in the games. (Olympic Games)

Activity 2:

The students will be separated into heterogeneous groups of four and give the name of a country (Spain, Greece, France, Britain, Canada, and United States).  Then the teacher will have set up some different stations outside on the playground.

Activity 3:

At one station the students can throw the discus.  While one team throws the discus, the other team will be measuring the distances of each of three throws.  Each team will have a score card and pencil to keep track of each person’s throws.  The measuring team will then all throw the discus and also write down all of their distances.

Activity 4:

These two teams will then move to the station of shot put.  While one team throws, the other will measure the distances.  And again, the teams will record their distances.

Activity 5:

One team will be trying out the long jump pit.  One member will record the distances and record the distance on the score card.  And also there will be a team running distances of 100meter and 200 meter dash.  The teacher will be recording the times of this team and will write the time down on the score card.

Evaluation:

The students will be graded on their participation and effort put into the stations.  The students will be informally assessed by the teacher asking a few questions of the sports.  What type of person was good at running the distances?  What is a good form for throwing discus? Shot put?  What is a good form for the long jump?  What other sports are played in the summer Olympics?  Use the Physical Education Rubric to assess.
