Freedom Riders

           Unit Goals

Physical Goal:

Students will interact physically with each other in their learning environment through both visual and tactile means.  By doing so they will gain a sense of what life was like in the Civil Rights era.

Social Goal:

Students will work cooperatively and collaboratively as they generate ideas, participate in discussions, and work jointly on their mural project.  They will experience first-hand the injustices of certain situations.  Through discrimination, students will learn and experience respect for one another and gain an appreciation for God’s diverse creation.

Academic Goal:

By participation in class activities, students will learn of the people, events, and history of the Civil Rights movement.  Students will then share through written speeches, poetry, journal writing, science, and be able to grasp major events.

Spiritual Goal:

In the beginning we were all created perfect and loving, but because of the fall, sin (hate) entered, but through Christ we can be redeemed.  Students will recognize their identity in the body of Christ and realize that each person has worth no matter the color of his/her skin.  Students will learn acceptance of others as the body of Christ.

Emotional Goal:

We expect students to become aroused/fired up and to experience a holy, righteous anger whenever anyone (including themselves) are being discriminated against.  We want them to be empathetic with others, feel empowered, sad or angry about the past in order to be moved to want to change.
